| Landstrumm and Pacou's two-pronged assault |
A double-salvo from Neil Landstrumm (pictured) and Pacou saw Void enter its second year of being in true underground style. Landstrumm, making his China debut, delivered a more techno-orientated live set than anticipated, dropping all manner of samples, breaks and bleeps from his diverse disocgraphy of productions.
He kept the crowd alert with an always-fresh sound, combining cutting-edge dubstep into his trademark bass-driven live attack strategy. He also indulged both his own, and the Void crew's penchant for old-school samples, with Robert Armani's "Ambulance" bring dropped into his set and Cajmere's classic "Perculator". An abrupt "kick!" sample brought Landstrumm's show to a close, and a delighted crowd showed their appreciation for Void's first live performer.
Void residents Nat and Shanghai Ultra then got busy, keeping the dancefloor on its toes in readiness for the man from Berlin, Pacou. The Tresor DJ let fly with a set laden with more classics than Beethoven. From Der Klang Der Famillie to several tracks from Jeff Mills Waveform transmission, the seminal tracks boomed across The Shelter. Pacou projected an unmistakeable Germanic aura as he manipulated the decks - very much the polar opposite to the animated body-funk of Traxx a month earlier , but the music was of equal excellence. This was a set of very serious techno indeed, letting Shanghai hear some of the genre's seminal early tracks for the first time.
The crowd had diminished in number by 5.30am but their enthusiasm and willingness to continue dancing had not, and it was with great reluctance that Pacou banged out his final track. Reluctantly, the heads conceeded defeat and stopped dancingas Void brought down the curtain on their first year of rocking Shanghai's underground house and techno scene.
Many thanks to all who showed up, and to Neil and Pacou for their great performances.
