NAT ALEXANDER

natdecksdarkAlong with an early interest in hip-hop, Nat Alexander was, like Shanghai_Ultra,a listener to John Peel’s radio show and wanted (though didn’t get) his first set of decks at the age of fourteen. He started listening to dance music in earnest at the start of the arrival of the rave scene in the UK; interested in early German trance on labels like Harthouse, he was also exposed to Laurent Garnier, Steve Bicknell and Colin Faver in his early days of clubbing. While at university, he went to a Lost night at The End and saw Juan Atkins and Derrick May for the first time and was able to hear the Detroit techno which he had been buying for some time played in the perfect environment. At the same club he also heard many of the great Chicago DJs at the time of the rejuvenation of that city’s scene, largely due to Cajual / Relief Records. Nat Alexander’s sets encompass music from across the dance music spectrum: genre categorisation falls by the wayside, there is simply music that rocks, and that which does not. Myspace page

SHANGHAI ULTRA

ultrainkoreaShanghai_Ultra adopted his curious moniker following a year-long stay near the city in 2000-2001, where he encountered the unique body-techno of the Blue Devil fan group of Shanghai Shenhua FC. Five years earlier he had released released several vinyls on labels including the now defunct "Shoop! Records" with childhood friend and long-time writing partner Kenario. Their youthful indulgence in the artistically bankrupt and drug-obsessed Scottish rave scene offended the pair's underground ethos and left them somewhat disillusioned. In a reactionary move, Ultra then released the first ever hardcore techno EP in Scotland in 1995, using the name Unknown Source. Ultra then disappeared for a few years heading off to university, releasing the odd Detroit techno-inspired transmission from time to time from his secret bunker. He was still enjoying dancing too much to make time for his own musical career. At heart though, he was a detroit techno lover - ever since hearing R-tyme's "Illusion" in the late 80s, and also a long time admirer of the Chicago sound, namely Adonis. He later fell in love with the bleeps and Bass of LFO, and, after hearing Mentasm's "Second Phase" on the late John Peel's legendary Radio One show, became a huge fan of Joey Beltram. Very much from the Underground Resistance school of thought, the publicity-shy Ultra returned to Shanghai in 2005, having never forgotten the energy and dynamism of the East Asia metropolis from his first visit.. Still producing, he is rumoured to be releasing an album with Shanghainese producer and fellow Blue Devil MHP.

MHP

mhpondecksMHP represents the Shanghainese contingent of Void. Essentially a techno / electronica producer, MHP's innate understanding of techno music and its descendants is impressive for someone who grew up in a country where no such scenes existed. Influenced by a diverse range of artists from Jeff Mills and Kraftwerk to Joy Division and Brian Eno, MHP's fresh and innovative recording work has been published on Chinavibe records in Beijing. Very much an artists' artist, MHP's production skills and natural musical talent mark him out from the crowd. The Void crew's Shanghai sonic soldier.
